Summary findings from MHSDS

MHSDS main findings

At the end of December 2021 (based on hospital spells data):

  • There were 3,440 people with learning disabilities and/ or autistic spectrum disorders (LDA) in hospital.
  • There were 895 admissions and 1,100 discharges. 78% of these were discharged back into the community.
  • There were 266,410 referrals for people with LDA.

Of these inpatients:

  • 1,355 (39%) had been in hospital for over 2 years.
  • There are 605 inpatients with a planned discharge date (18%).
  • 150 (4%) had a delayed discharge.
  • The largest proportion (31%) were aged between 25-34 (1,070).
  • The lowest proportion (5%) were aged 65 and over (175).
  • 68% were male (2,330) and 30% were female (1,050).

Findings based on ward stays data:

  • There were 3,295 ward stays reported for the end of the period.
  • The largest group of inpatients were in a adult mental health ward (1,475, 45%), followed by an learning disabilities ward (1,200, 36%).
  • 2,030 (62%) were in a non-secure setting. 1,150 (35%) were in a secure setting.
  • 510 (15%) travelled over 50km from home to get to the hospital for care or treatment.
  • 350 patients were restrained at least once.
