Summary findings from MHSDS

MHSDS main findings

At the end of May 2021 (based on hospital spells data):

  • There were 3,650 people with learning disabilities and/ or autistic spectrum disorders (LDA) in hospital.
  • There were 1,010 admissions and 1,110 discharges. 87% of these were discharged back into the community.
  • There were 254,955 referrals for people with LDA.

Of these inpatients:

  • 1,395 (38%) had been in hospital for over 2 years.
  • There are 600 inpatients with a planned discharge date (16%).
  • 135 (4%) had a delayed discharge.
  • The largest proportion (30%) were aged between 25-34 (1,085).
  • The lowest proportion (4%) were aged 65 and over (150).
  • 69% were male (2520) and 30% were female (1,110).

Findings based on ward stays data:

  • There were 3,505 ward stays reported for the end of the period.
  • The largest group of inpatients were in an adult mental health ward (1,455, 42%), followed by a learning disabilities ward (1,315, 38%).
  • 2,110 (60%) were in a non-secure setting. 1,280 (37%) were in a secure setting.
  • 610 (17%) travelled over 50km from home to get to the hospital for care or treatment.
  • 500 patients were restrained at least once.
