Learning Disability Services Monthly Statistics AT: June 2021, MHSDS: April 2021 Final

At the end of April 2021 (based on hospital spells data):

• There were 3,600 people with learning disabilities and/ or autistic spectrum disorders (LDA) in hospital.
• There were 1,040 admissions and 1,140 discharges. 86% of these were discharged back into the community.
• There were 249,865 referrals for people with LDA.

Of these inpatients:

• 1,355 (38%) had been in hospital for over 2 years.
• There are 560 inpatients with a planned discharge date (16%).
• 130 (4%) had a delayed discharge.
• The largest proportion (30%) were aged between 25-34 (1,065).
• The lowest proportion (4%) were aged 65 and over (160).
• 68% were male (2,455) and 31% were female (1,125).

Findings based on ward stays data:

• There were 3,425 ward stays reported for the end of the period.
• The largest group of inpatients were in an adult mental health ward (1,435, 42%), followed by a learning disabilities ward (1,305, 38%).
• 2,050 (60%) were in a non-secure setting. 1,265 (37%) were in a secure setting.
• 585 (17%) travelled over 50km from home to get to the hospital for care or treatment.
• 445 patients were restrained at least once.
