Summary findings from MHSDS

MHSDS main findings

At the end of April 2022 (based on hospital spells data):

  • There were 3,590 people with learning disabilities and/ or autistic spectrum disorders (LDA) in hospital.  
  • There were 1,025 admissions and 1,135 discharges. 80% of these were discharged back into the community. 
  • There were 291,190 referrals for people with LDA. 

Of these inpatients:

  • 1,380 (38%) had been in hospital for over 2 years.
  • There are 585 inpatients with a planned discharge date (16%).
  • 235 (7%) had a delayed discharge.
  • The largest proportion (31%) were aged between 25-34 (1,110).
  • The lowest proportion (5%) were aged 65 and over (170).
  • 68% were male (2,450) and 31% were female (1,110).

Findings based on ward stays data:

  • There were 3,415 ward stays reported for the end of the period.
  •  The largest group of inpatients were in a adult mental health ward (1,555, 45%), followed by an learning disabilities ward (1,215, 36%). 
  • 2,040 (60%) were in a non-secure setting. 1,245 (36%) were in a secure setting.
  • 505 (16%) travelled over 50km from home to get to the hospital for care or treatment.
  • 525 patients were restrained at least once.
