Error affecting Table 4.6

An error affecting the “Patients with planned transfer/discharge date of which authority is aware” data by age and patient category within table 4.6 has been identified.  This data did not correctly reflect the change to this question in AT v4 from 1 April 2024 and has been withdrawn as a result

The total number of patients with planned transfer/discharge date of which authority is aware is available in table 3.2 and is unaffected by the error which affected table 4.6.

The affected section of table 4.6 has been reinstated from the January 2025 publication (December 2024 data) onwards.

Release of MHSDS component of this publication

The MHSDS component of this publication was added in on 25th July 2024, following the release of the AT component on 20th June 2024.

This was due to the impact on MHSDS submission timescales resulting from the implementation of MHSDS v6.

Editions from August 2024 onwards are expected to revert to normal, with data from both collections available on release day.

NHS England apologises for any inconvenience this may have caused.

Changes to AT dataset from April 2024

Significant changes were made to the AT dataset (v4.0) from 2 April 2024. Some of these changes impacted on the breakdowns available in the AT data tables and these have been footnoted where relevant.

Full details about these changes can be found within the current release of the AT information standard

Decommissioning of MHSDS and AT comparators file

Up  until the edition of the Learning Disability Services publication released in April 2024, a comparators file showing the headcounts of inpatients across AT and MHSDS for each provider, as well as the headcount at England level, was included. We have decommissioned this file from the May 2024 release onwards to streamline our processes as key figures can be calculated using the data files we routinely publish as part of the Learning Disabilities and Autism publication series.

Full details are available within the Data Quality - MHSDS page under 'Accuracy and reliability'.

Summary

Latest monthly statistics on Learning Disabilities and Autism (LDA) patients from the Assuring Transformation (AT) collection and Mental Health Services Data Set (MHSDS).

Data on inpatients with learning disabilities and/or autism are being collected both within the AT collection and MHSDS. There are differences in the inpatient figures between the AT and MHSDS data sets and work has been ongoing to better understand these. LDA data from MHSDS are experimental statistics, however, while impacts from the cyber incident are still present they will be considered to be management information.

From October 2021, LDA MHSDS data has been collected under MHSDS version 5.

From 1 July 2022, Integrated Care Boards were established within Integrated Care Systems data and replaced Sustainability and Transformation Plans (STPs). Clinical Commissioning Groups have been replaced by sub-Integrated Care Boards. Data for the AT collection is now submitted by sub-Integrated Care Boards. This has resulted in some renaming within tables and the inclusion of a new Table 5.1b with a patient breakdown by submitting organisation. Patients by originating organisation and commissioning type are still available in Table 5.1a. Data in the tables are now presented by the current organisational structures. Old organisational structures have been mapped to new structures in any time series.
