Summary findings from MHSDS

MHSDS main findings

At the end of July 2021 (based on hospital spells data):

  • There were 3,655 people with learning disabilities and/ or autistic spectrum disorders (LDA) in hospital.
  • There were 1,115 admissions and 1,170 discharges. 86% of these were discharged back into the community.
  • There were 261,560 referrals¹ for people with LDA.

Of these inpatients:

  • 1,395 (38%) had been in hospital for over 2 years.
  • There are 600 inpatients with a planned discharge date (16%).
  • 160 (4%) had a delayed discharge.
  • The largest proportion (30%) were aged between 25-34 (1,080).
  • The lowest proportion (4%) were aged 65 and over (150).
  • 69% were male (2,510) and 31% were female (1,130).

Findings based on ward stays data:

  • There were 3,435 ward stays reported for the end of the period.
  • The largest group of inpatients were in a adult mental health ward (1,435, 42%), followed by an learning disabilities ward (1,315, 38%).
  • 2,115 (61%) were in a non-secure setting². 1,215 (35%) were in a secure setting.
  • 580 (17%) travelled over 50km from home to get to the hospital for care or treatment.
  • 455 patients were restrained at least once.
