Cyber Incident Impact

Unfortunately, a handful of providers of Learning Disabilities data have been affected by a recent cyber incident. NHS Digital has actively worked with these providers to understand how best to resolve any data submission issues that may have occurred as a result. We also continue to encourage affected providers to reach out to [email protected] as well as their regional Emergency Preparedness, Resilience and Response (EPRR) teams.

Review of data received to end of Sept 2022 suggests the impact on monthly Learning Disabilities data is limited. We’ll continue to monitor this closely and introduce contingency measures if required. No changes to submission processes will be introduced while service providers are actively dealing with this issue.

Summary findings from MHSDS

MHSDS main findings

At the end of July 2022 (based on hospital spells data):

  • There were 3,345 people with learning disabilities and/ or autistic spectrum disorders (LDA) in hospital.
  • There were 1,045 admissions and 1,160 discharges. 78% of these were discharged back into the community.
  • There were 298,830 referrals¹ for people with LDA.

Of these inpatients:

  • 1,110 (33%) had been in hospital for over 2 years.
  • There are 600 inpatients with a planned discharge date (18%).
  • 235 (7%) had a delayed discharge.
  • The largest proportion (29%) were aged between 25-34 (965).
  • The lowest proportion (5%) were aged under 18 (175).
  • 68% were male (2,285) and 31% were female (1,045).

Findings based on ward stays data:

  • There were 3,015 ward stays reported for the end of the period.
  • The largest group of inpatients were in a adult mental health ward (1,535, 51%), followed by a learning disabilities ward (975, 32%).
  • 1,800 (60%) were in a non-secure setting². 1,085 (36%) were in a secure setting.
  • 460 (15%) travelled over 50km from home to get to the hospital for care or treatment.
  • 510 patients were restrained at least once.

1 These include all open referrals without a hospital spell associated with them if the inpatient did not need to stay overnight in hospital.

2 Non-secure wards include inpatients in general wards. Secure wards include patients in low, medium and high secure ward settings.
