Learning Disability Services Monthly Statistics (AT: February 2021, MHSDS: December 2020 Final)

Data collected at the end of February 2021 show that:

• 2,050 inpatients were in hospital at the end of the reporting period.
• More inpatients were discharged (130) than admitted (90) to hospitals. Out of the 130 inpatients who were discharged/transferred from hospital in February 2021, 90 (70%) were discharged back into the community.
• Many inpatients have been in hospital for a long time. Of those in hospital at the end of January 2021, 1,210 (59%) had a total length of stay of over 2 years.
• Around half of inpatients (1,085, 53%) were in a non-secure ward. There were 965 (47%) inpatients in a secure ward.
• The largest proportion of inpatients (29%) were aged between 25-34 (595) and the lowest proportion (2%) were aged 65 and over (40).
• In line with previous months trends, there were more males (1,460) than females (585) in hospital this month (71% were male).
• There were 90 admissions to hospital; of these 55 were first admissions, 15 were readmissions within a year of the previous discharge and 20 were transfers from other hospitals.
• Over a third of inpatients (36%) last had a review of their care over 6 months ago (750 people).
• Under half of inpatients (48%) have a date planned for them to leave hospital (995).

At the end of December 2020 (based on hospital spells data):

• There were 3,120 people with learning disabilities and/ or autistic spectrum disorders (LDA) in hospital.
• There were 1,035 admissions and 1,130 discharges. 88% of these were discharged back into the community.
• There were 242,000 referrals for people with LDA.

Of these inpatients:

• 1,220 (39%) had been in hospital for over 2 years.
• There are 485 inpatients with a planned discharge date (15%).
• 105 (3%) had a delayed discharge.
• The largest proportion (29%) were aged between 25-34 (915).
• The lowest proportion (4%) were aged 65 and over (140).
• 70% were male (2,185) and 30% were female (920).

Findings based on ward stays data:

• There were 3,085 ward stays reported for the end of the period.
• The largest group of inpatients were in a learning disabilities ward (1,335, 43%), followed by an adult mental health ward (1,295, 42%).
• 1,885 (61%) were in a non-secure setting. 1,110 (36%) were in a secure setting.
• 470 (15%) travelled over 50km from home to get to the hospital for care or treatment.
• 400 patients were restrained at least once.
