Main findings from the AT and MHSDS datasets
Assuring Transformation dataset
Data collected at the end of August 2020 show that:
- 2,100 inpatients were in hospital at the end of the reporting period.
- More inpatients were discharged (105) than admitted (80) to hospitals. Out of the 105 inpatients who were discharged/transferred from hospital in August 2020, 80 (74%) were discharged back into the community.
- Many inpatients have been in hospital for a long time. Of those in hospital at the end of August 2020, 1,255 (60%) had a total length of stay of over 2 years.
- At the end of August 2020, around half of inpatients (1,095, 52%) were in a non-secure ward. There were 1,005 (48%) inpatients in a secure ward.
- The largest proportion of inpatients (30%) were aged between 25-34 (630) and the lowest proportion (2%) were aged 65 and over (35).
- In line with previous months trends, there were more males (1,485) than females (615) in hospital this month (71% were male).
- There were 80 admissions to hospital; of these 45 were first admissions, 20 were readmissions within a year of the previous discharge and 15 were transfers from other hospitals.
- Less than half of inpatients (39%) last had a review of their care over 6 months ago (830 people).
- Half of inpatients (50%) have a date planned for them to leave hospital (1,050).
Mental Health Services Data Set
Data collected for LDA inpatients at the end of June 2020 show that:
- There were 3,260 people with learning disabilities and/ or autistic spectrum disorders (LDA) in hospital.
- There were 960 admissions and 965 discharges. 81% of these were discharged back into the community.
- There were 220,795 referrals for people with LDA.
Of these inpatients:
- 1,275 (39%) had been in hospital for over 2 years.
- There are 615 inpatients with a planned discharge date (19%).
- 115 (4%) had a delayed discharge.
- The largest proportion (31%) were aged between 25-34 (1,005).
- The lowest proportion (5%) were aged 65 and over (145).
- 71% were male (2,305) and 29% were female (945).
Findings based on ward stays data:
- There were 3,235 ward stays reported for the end of the period.
- The largest group of inpatients were in a learning disabilities ward (1,400, 43%), followed by an adult mental health ward (1,310, 41%).
- 1,955 (60%) were in a non-secure setting. 1,170 (36%) were in a secure setting.
- 500 (15%) travelled over 50km from home to get to the hospital for care or treatment.
- 425 patients were restrained at least once.
