MHSDS main findings

At the end of March 2021 (based on hospital spells data):

  • There were 3,310 people with learning disabilities and/ or autistic spectrum disorders (LDA) in hospital.
  • There were 1,210 admissions and 1,215 discharges. 88% of these were discharged back into the community.
  • There were 248,550 referrals for people with LDA.

Of these inpatients:

  • 1,255 (38%) had been in hospital for over 2 years.
  • There are 485 inpatients with a planned discharge date (15%).
  • 120 (4%) had a delayed discharge.
  • The largest proportion (29%) were aged between 25-34 (965).
  • The lowest proportion (5%) were aged 65 and over (150).
  • 69% were male (2,290) and 30% were female (1,010).

Findings based on ward stays data:

  • There were 3,150 ward stays reported for the end of the period.
  • The largest group of inpatients were in an adult mental health ward (1,445, 46%), followed by a learning disabilities ward (1,310, 42%).
  • 1,915 (61%) were in a non-secure setting. 1,125 (36%) were in a secure setting.
  • 500 (16%) travelled over 50km from home to get to the hospital for care or treatment.
  • 415 patients were restrained at least once.
