Removal of case ascertainment analysis
This publication previously included analysis on case ascertainment in order to give an indication of how effective the registry is in identifying cases. Private Healthcare Information Network (PHIN) data was used to identify operations that should have been recorded in the BCIR where the care was privately funded. We have identified that there are several independent healthcare providers who have not submitted data to PHIN meaning that this data is incomplete and the previously published case ascertainment estimates are unreliable. Therefore, the case ascertainment analysis has been removed from this publication.

Summary
The Breast and Cosmetic Implant Registry (BCIR) records the details of any individual who has breast implant surgery, so that they can be traced in the event of a product recall or other safety concern relating to a specific type of implant. Data collection started in England in late 2016, in Scotland in 2019 and in Northern Ireland in 2021.
The purpose of this report is to provide information on the uptake of the registry. It does not provide a comprehensive view of the number of breast implant operations undertaken. It provides an overview of the data collected between January and December 2021 and includes some historical data from the start of the registry in 2016 to 2021. Information in this report represents data that was extracted from the registry on 01 April 2022.
Highlights
Impact of Coronavirus (COVID-19) on the registry
There has been increased pressure on medical services due to coronavirus (COVID-19). This affected the capacity of surgery providers to undertake elective operations in 2020, and may have affected elective operations in 2021. More information on the effects of COVID-19 on BCIR is available later in this report.
Further information on how the registry collects data, and what it does with it, can be found in the related links section below.
