Demographics

Non-diabetic hyperglycaemia and type 2 diabetes

People with non-diabetic hyperglycaemia (NDH) and people with type 2 diabetes (T2DM) show a very similar distribution of characteristics across a number of demographics. However, there are some differences as seen below.

  • Sex - People with NDH are less likely to be male than people with type 2 diabetes.
  • Ethnicity - People with NDH are less likely to be of Asian ethnicity than people with type 2 diabetes
  • Deprivation - People with NDH are less likely to be from the most deprived areas than people with type 2 diabetes

  • Body Mass Index (BMI) - People with NDH are much less likely to have a recent BMI measurement recorded by their GP, and are less likely to be living with obesity than people with type 2 diabetes.

  1. People registered at a GP practice that participated in NDA 2021-22.
  2. Ethnicity is categorised using the 2011 census categories for ethnic group.
  3. The 'Unknown' categories for age and deprivation are very low volume.
  4. Index of multiple deprivation (IMD) is used to assign levels of deprivation by person’s home address where IMD1 is for the most deprived and IMD5 is for the least deprived areas.
  5. The sum of individual percentages may not total 100 due to suppression and rounding.
