Section 1 - Care processes and treatment targets
Care processes completion, England and Wales, 2019-20 to 2021-22
The box plots in figures 1, 2 and 3 show the median and interquartile ranges across sub ICBs and LHBs of percentage completion of care processes.
The box plots show that fewer adults with type 1 diabetes had their care process checks in 2020-21 than had them in 2019-20 due to the disruption in care caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. While levels of care process completion had not returned to pre-pandemic levels, the figure for 2021-22 shows that there has been an improvement on the 2020-21 levels. For example, the median percentage of people who had the HbA1c care process in 2019-20 was 89.4%. In 2020-21 this dropped to 80.0%, but had bounced back to 83.7% in 2021-22.
Treatment target achievement, England and Wales, 2019-20 to 2021-22
The box plots in figures 4 and 5 show the median and interquartile ranges across sub ICBs and LHBs of percentage achievement of treatment targets.
The box plots show a mixed picture regarding the changes in treatment target achievement over time. While HbA1c target achievement has improved, with an increase in median achievement of 5 percentage points between 2019-20 and 2021-22, blood pressure target achievement has fallen from 73.4% to 69.9% over the same period. The median percentage of adults with type 1 diabetes across sub ICBs who achieved all 3 treatment targets has seen an increase from 16.9% in 2019-20 to 19.2% in 2021-22
Change in HbA1c achievement over time
Figure 6 shows that the improvement in HbA1c treatment target achievement which took place between 2019-20 and 2020-21 was sustained, and even slightly improved, in 2021-22. In 2021-22, a third of adults with type 1 diabetes had an HbA1c level of 58 mmol/mol or lower. This is an improvement of 5 percentage points on the figure for 2019-20.
