Changes to NDA Reporting

NHS England are currently reviewing the routine production of NDA State of the Nation reports. Please note that data will still be released via dashboards and standalone data files whilst this review is being conducted.

To help inform this review we would be grateful if users can provide feedback on their use of the State of the Nation reports using the feedback survey available in the ‘Related links' section of this page.

Executive summary

This State of the Nation report has identified important findings relating to people living with diabetes related foot disease and their foot care processes and outcomes in England and Wales during the period 01 April 2018 to 31 March 2023.

Key finding 1

Time to first expert assessment (FEA) is key to achieving the positive outcomes of being alive and ulcer free (AAUF) at 12 weeks

Key finding 2

There is a marked variation between foot care services both in terms of assessment and outcomes

Key finding 3

There are wide ranging differences between regions, integrated care boards and services in ulcer registration rates, and also the percentage of those registered that are classified as severe

To help guide service improvement, the National Diabetes Foot Care Audit (NDFA) has listed recommendations that aim to further improve foot care provision and outcomes.
