Summary
This is the fourth release of data to form part of the National Obesity Audit (NOA) which now presents data from two sources (hence the slight name change to the publication series). This publication series includes a developing set of nationally agreed measures which will eventually provide a comprehensive picture of activity, access to services and health outcomes of patients using weight management services across England. This allows providers to track, benchmark and improve the quality of these services.
This release includes data from both Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) for Tier 4 WMS, and the Community Services Data Set (CSDS) for Tier 2 and Tier 3 WMS.

Disruption relating to the coronavirus illness (COVID-19) would seem to have affected the quality and coverage of some of our statistics, such as an increase in non-submissions for some datasets. We have also seen some different patterns in the submitted data. For example, fewer patients are being admitted to and discharged from hospital. Therefore, data should be interpreted with care over the COVID-19 period.
Highlights
Hospital Episode Statistics (HES)
Data on NHS funded bariatric surgical procedures delivered in England, sourced from Hospital Episode Statistics (HES), NHS England. This includes updates to the quarterly time series (starting in Q1 2017/18) for patients who had a primary bariatric surgical procedure in Q3 or Q4 in 2022/23. This is provisional data until the annual data is finalised and included in the annual time series. All previously published annual data for 2017/18 to 2021/22 is also available for several bariatric surgical procedures measures including a new breakdown for type of procedure by length of stay. Data is available at National, Regional, Integrated Care Board (ICB), Sub ICB and Provider level where possible. The interactive dashboard provides both annual and quarterly time series data. Please note that the dashboard will always show the most recent data available and therefore may contain data not included in this publication. The supporting Excel files containing the most recent data can be accessed via the latest publication.

Community Services Dataset (for Tier 2 and Tier 3 Weight Management Services)
This release presents new data on Weight Management Services (WMS) submitted to the Community Services Dataset (version 1.6, which commenced on 1 Jan 2023). This has been included as a series of data quality metrics (split by tiers) to help understand where there are gaps in coverage (non-submission) and where submitted data needs to improve before we start publishing any measures around activity, access and wait times and outcomes. This new interactive dashboard is primarily aimed at those who submit this data so they can address any data quality issues in future submissions. Currently only data for Q4 2022/23 is available which includes National and Provider level breakdowns.
