Hip Replacements

The chart below shows the number of NHS funded hip replacement procedures carried out in hospitals, pre-operative questionnaires returned and post-operative questionnaires returned.

  • There were 81,130 hip replacement procedures and 69,500 pre-operative questionnaires. This gives a headline participation rate of 85.7 %, which is a decrease from last year (86.1% in 2017-18).
  • Of the 69,500 pre-operative questionnaires, 55,029 successfully linked to a PROMs-eligible episode within HES giving a linkage rate of 79.2%. This is an increase from 76.8% in 2017-18.
  • Patients returned 71.0%  of the post-operative questionnaires they were sent, slightly higher than the 2017/18 response rate of 70.9%
  • Of the total number of HES episodes, 40,172 successfully linked to both a pre- and post-operative questionnaire, giving an overall rate of 49.5%, a small decrease compared to the previous year 2017/18 (49.7%).

Knee Replacements

The chart below shows the number of NHS funded knee replacement procedures carried out in hospitals, pre-operative questionnaires returned and post-operative questionnaires returned.

  • There were 93,911 knee replacement procedures and 80,840 pre-operative questionnaires. This gives a headline participation rate of 86.1 %, which is a decrease from last year (87.3% in 2017-18).
  • Of the 80,840 pre-operative questionnaires, 62,113 successfully linked to a PROMs-eligible episode within HES giving a linkage rate of 76.8%. This is an increase from 74.3% in 2017-18.
  • Patients returned 68.6%  of the post-operative questionnaires they were sent, slightly lower than the 2017/18 response rate of 69.5%
  • Of the total number of episodes found in HES, 44,264 successfully linked to both a pre- and post-operative questionnaire, giving an overall rate of 47.1%, a small increase compared to the previous year 2017/18 (48.7%).
