Sexual and Reproductive Health Services (Contraception)

Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) services in England include family planning services, community contraception clinics, integrated Genitourinary Medicine (GUM) and SRH services, and young people’s services e.g. Brook advisory centres. They provide a range of services including, but not exclusively, contraception provision and advice. 

The Sexual and Reproductive Activity Dataset consists of anonymised patient-level data submitted on an annual basis. It focuses mainly on contraception and also collects some data on contacts with SRH services for non-contraception related activity. This dataset  excludes contraception provided in out-patient clinics and by General Practitioners. It does not count contraceptives purchased over the counter at a pharmacy or in other retail settings.

The publication also includes some data from other sources: sterilisations and vasectomies in NHS hospitals from Hospital Episode Statistics; and data on contraceptives dispensed in the community sourced from the Prescription Cost Analysis (PCA) from the NHS Prescription Services Division of the Business Service Authority.

The publication contains national, local authority and provider level tables of data.
