Statistics on Women's Smoking Status at Time of Delivery: England, Quarter 2, 2019-20

10.4% of pregnant women were known to be smokers at the time of delivery during quarter 2 of 2019/20.

This is the same as the previous quarter (quarter 2, 2019/20).

The current national ambition is to achieve a level of 6% or less by 2022.

In quarter 2 of 2019/20, 5 CCGs recorded less than 3 per cent of women known to be smokers at time of delivery; NHS Ealing (1.8%), NHS City and Hackney (2.5%), NHS Lambeth (2.6%), NHS Central London (2.6%), and NHS Wandsworth (2.9%).

6 CCGs had proportions above 20%. Those with the highest were NHS North East Lincolnshire (24.6%), NHS Hull (21.5%), and NHS Blackpool (21.4%).

In quarter 2 of 2019/20, 31 out of 191 CCGs met the new national ambition of 6% or less.

In the London NHS England region, 24 out of 32 CCGs achieved the national ambition.

Only 7 CCGs outside of London achieved the national ambition.
