Statistics on Women's Smoking Status at Time of Delivery: England Quarter 2, 2022-23

Women known to be smokers at time of delivery
Percentage known to be smokers by year
9.1% of pregnant women were known to be smokers at the time of delivery during quarter 2 of 2022-23.
This is a slight increase from 8.9% in the previous quarter (Q1 of 2022-23).
The current national ambition is to achieve a level of 6% or less by 2022.
Percentage known to be smokers by Sub Integrated Care Board Location (Sub-ICB)
In quarter 2 of 2022-23, the lowest proportions of women known to be smokers at time of delivery were in NHS North West London ICB - W2U3Z (3.1%), NHS South West London ICB - 36L (4.7%), NHS South East London ICB - 72Q (4.7%) and NHS Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire and Berkshire West ICB - 15A (4.8%).
4 Sub-ICBs had proportions above 20%. Those with the highest were NHS Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland ICB - 03W (26.2%), NHS Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland ICB - 04V (26.2%) and NHS Lancashire and South Cumbria ICB - 00R (22.0%).
Data was received from all Sub-ICBs for quarter 2.

Percentage known to be smokers by Sub Integrated Care Board Location, compared with the national ambition
In quarter 2 of 2022-23, 9 out of 106 submitting Sub-ICBs met the national ambition of 6% or less.
In the London NHS England region, it was achieved by 5 out of 5 Sub-ICBs, but only by 4 Sub-ICBs outside of London.
