Statistics on Women's Smoking Status at Time of Delivery: England Quarter 3, 2023-24

Women known to be smokers at time of delivery
Percentage known to be smokers by year
7.3% of pregnant women were known to be smokers at the time of delivery during quarter 3 of 2023-24.
This is a slight decrease from 7.5% in the previous quarter (Q2 of 2023-24).
The current national ambition is to achieve a level of 6% or less by 2022.
Percentage known to be smokers by Sub Integrated Care Board (Sub-ICB)
In quarter 3 of 2023-24, the lowest proportions of women known to be smokers at time of delivery were in NHS North West London ICB - W2U3Z (2.9%), NHS North East London ICB - A3A8R (3.5%), NHS Hertfordshire and West Essex ICB - 06N (3.8%) and NHS Greater Manchester ICB - 02A (3.8%).
Two Sub-ICBs had proportions above 15%. Those with the highest were NHS Lancashire and South Cumbria ICB - 00R (18.2%) and NHS Humber and North Yorkshire ICB - 03F (15.2%).
Data was received from all Sub-ICBs for quarter 3.

Percentage known to be smokers by Sub Integrated Care Board, compared with the national ambition
In quarter 3 of 2023-24, 22 out of 106 submitting Sub-ICBs met the national ambition of 6% or less.
In the East of England NHS England region, it was achieved by 6 out of 14 Sub-ICBs, but only by 16 Sub-ICBs outside of East of England.
