Women known to be smokers at time of delivery
Percentage known to be smokers by year
10.4% of pregnant women were known to be smokers at the time of delivery in 2019/20.
This is similar to the level of 10.6% recorded in 2018/19, but down from 14.2% in 2009/10.
The current national ambition is to achieve a level of 6% or less by 2022.
Percentage known to be smokers by quarter
10.5% of pregnant women were known to be smokers at the time of delivery during quarter 4 of 2019-20.
This is a slight increase from 10.4% in the previous quarter (quarter 3, 2019-20).
Percentage known to be smokers by Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG)
In quarter 4 of 2019-20, the lowest proportions of women known to be smokers at time of deivery were NHS Hammersmith and Fulham CCG (1.9%), NHS West London CCG (1.9%) and NHS Wandsworth CCG (2.1%).
7 CCGs had proportions above 20%. Those with the highest were NHS Blackpool (22.8%), NHS Sunderland CCG (21.7%), and NHS Durham Dales, Easington and Sedgefield CCG (21.0%).
Percentage known to be smokers by Clinical Commissioning Group, compared with the national ambition
In quarter 4 of 2019-20, 40 out of 190 CCGs met the national ambition of 6% or less.
In the London NHS England region, it was achieved by 26 out of 32 CCGs, but only by 14 CCGs outside of London.
