Women known to be smokers at time of delivery
Percentage known to be smokers by year
10.6% of pregnant women were known to be smokers at the time of delivery in 2018/19.
This is similar to the level of 10.8% recorded in 2017/18, but down from 14.6% in 2008/09.
The current national ambition is to achieve a level of 6% or less by 2022.
Percentage known to be smokers by Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG)
In 2018/19, the CCGs with the lowest proportion of women known to be smokers at time of delivery were NHS West London (1.6%), NHS Central London (Westminster) (1.9%) and NHS Richmond (2.2%).
8 CCGs had proportions above 20%. Those with the highest were NHS Blackpool (25.7%), NHS North East Lincolnshire (23.2%) and NHS Mansfield and Ashfield (21.4%).
Percentage known to be smokers by Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), compared with the national ambition
In 2018/19, 28 out of 195 CCGs met the new national ambition of 6% or less.
In the London NHS England region, 22 out of 32 CCGs achieved the national ambition.
Only 6 CCGs outside of London achieved the national ambition.
