ECAP baseline report

The Endometrial Cancer Audit Pilot (ECAP) baseline report publication provides a disease profile of Endometrial Cancer in England and presents findings on incidence, mortality and survival.

Highlights

The first report from Endometrial Cancer Audit Pilot, the Baseline Report, was published in April 2025.

It provided an overview of endometrial cancer, including how many people were diagnosed (incidence) with endometrial cancer between 2017 and 2019, how many people died from it (mortality), the stage at diagnosis, and survival rates. In addition to stage, the report examined the distribution of patient and tumour characteristics, including deprivation (IMD), ethnicity, and tumour morphology.

Key Findings:

  1. The rate of endometrial cancer diagnoses in England had steadily increased since 2001, likely related principally to increasing rates of obesity in England.
  2. The number of new cases and deaths from endometrial cancer varied across different Cancer Alliances and Integrated Care Boards (ICBs). The level of variation was greater than what would be expected by chance, suggesting real differences between regions.
  3. Among women diagnosed between 2017 and 2019, the stage at diagnosis varied depending on age and geography. Some of this variation may have been due to gaps in the data, but other factors could also have played a role.
  4. The completeness of stage data varied by geographical region. Improving the quality and availability of this information would help provide more accurate insights and support better decision-making.

Methodology

This Baseline Report constitutes the first report of a series of analyses throughout the two-year project. It provides a detailed insight into the status of this disease in England at the commencement of the project, including details of disease incidence, mortality and survival.

Rather than collect fresh information the analyses were achieved by linking databases which capture clinical data on cancer and its treatment in routine day-to-day practice in NHS hospitals in England. The Cancer Outcomes and Services Dataset (COSD) captures details of every cancer diagnosed in NHS organisations, including pathology details and a set of important clinical parameters such as disease stage.

This initial baseline report provides a disease profile and is intended to enable comparison with international jurisdictions, and identification of regional variation which should lead to improvements in clinical practice and outcomes in due course. Data presented in this report are available as a download from the report contents page. Additionally, information on the completeness of information is available to providers via the CancerStats2 portal*. (This opens in a new window). Additionally, trust-level findings on endometrial cancer incidence, mortality and survival are available via this portal.

*Please note that this platform requires an N3/HSCN secure network connection and password access which can be authorised for relevant NHS staff by provider trust cancer management teams.
