Cancer quality of life survey

The cancer Quality of Life (QOL) is national survey run by NHS England, aimed at finding out how quality of life may have changed for people diagnosed with cancer.

About the survey

The Cancer Quality of Life Survey is a national survey run in partnership with NHS England. The survey is for people in England who have had a cancer diagnosis.

The survey started in September 2020 for some people who had had a breast, prostate or colorectal (bowel) cancer diagnosis. Since October 2021, all people who have had a cancer diagnosis have been being invited to complete the survey around 18 months after diagnosis.

The aim of the survey is to find out how quality of life may have changed for people diagnosed with cancer. The survey asks people who have experienced cancer how they are feeling. Their answers will be compared with information about their cancer diagnosis and treatment. This will help the NHS see where care is working well or not so well, and if any new services are needed. It will help the NHS to improve the way it supports people to live as long and as well as possible.

How NDRS are supporting the survey

All the survey responses are held by NDRS and linked with information related to each person’s diagnosis and treatment. This helps to understand if there are any specific support needs for people with certain types of cancer.

Information held in the NDRS cancer register is used each month to identify people who have been diagnosed with cancer and who are newly eligible to be invited to complete the survey. This information is securely shared with Quality Health, a company who have been appointed to carry out the survey. Quality Health use this information to send out the survey invitations. They also collect the survey responses and return them to NDRS.

Analysis

A company called Quality Health have been appointed to send out the survey invitations and collect answers to the survey.

NDRS, as part of NHS England, is responsible for analysing and presenting the results of the survey.
