Introduction
Cancer registration statistics are used to measure the occurrence of cancer within the population of England; used alongside cancer prevalence, mortality and survival, policy-makers can determine the overall burden of cancer, which can inform cancer policies and programmes, inform cancer research, raise cancer awareness and brief government ministers.
Incidence and mortality statistics, England
The counts and rates of cancer diagnoses (incidence) and cancer deaths (mortality) in the Cancer Registration Statistics, England publication are designated as National Statistics. National Statistics are a subset of Official Statistics, which have been certified by the UK Statistics Authority as compliant with its code of practice for statistics. More information on National Statistics can be found on the Office for Statistics Regulation website.
The Cancer Registration Statistics, England publication reports on newly-diagnosed malignant primary neoplasms (cancer tumours) registered in England in addition to cancer deaths registered in England.
