Secure robot authentication Registration Authority guidance

Registration Authority instructions for setting up non person-specific user profiles, known as Robotic Process Automation (RPA).

Robot identity setup and tracking

With Care Identity Management release 7.14 on 28 February 2024, we introduced the ability to create RPA profiles. Read more about how to create a new RPA profile.

Issue an RPA authenticator

To issue an RPA authenticator, first find the required RPA profile. From the Care Identity Management home page, choose 'Find an existing user'.

CIM dashboard 5.18 find user highlighted

Enter the RPA profile details and select 'Search'.

Care Identity Management find an existing user

Choose 'View profile' on the right of the screen.

CIM RPA profile found

The RPA profile will be displayed. Towards the bottom, select the Authenticators tab and choose 'Issue other authenticator'.

CIM RPA issue other authenticator

On the authenticator selection screen, choose 'Robotic Process Automation authenticator'.

CIM RPA authenticator selection

You will now see a page of instructions on how to complete the process.

CIM RPA registration instructions

Part of the instructions asks you to right click Secure Robot Authentication in your task bar and select 'RPA Activation'. You can see an image of how this looks below.

When you have read the instructions and you are happy to proceed, select 'Generate activation code'. You'll now see the activation code described in the instructions.

The user should now follow the instructions to complete the registration process.

Important note about activation codes

Generating the activation code causes the authenticator to be listed as 'Active' in the Authenticators tab on the user profile screen, whether or not the registration process has been completed.

The activation code can only be generated once. If the code is not used, the authenticator will need to be removed first before you can follow this process again to register it. See the instructions below on how to remove the authenticator.

Remove an RPA authenticator

From the RPA profile, select the 'Authenticators' tab, find the authenticator in the list and select 'Remove' on the right.

You'll now see a screen where you can confirm you want to remove the authenticator.

Once you have confirmed, you will see a confirmation message.

CIM RPA authenticator remove success

The authenticator will no longer be displayed in the Authenticators tab of the RPA profile.
