Chrome extension users unable to authenticate

Find out what to do if you're unable to authenticate and you suspect it's due to issues relating to the NHS Chrome extension.

The issue

You are trying to authenticate into Care Identity Service but you see an error page similar to the images below.

Chrome extension error 1

Chrome extension error 2

Likely cause

If you are using the NHS Chrome extension, you can experience problems logging in. This is because the Chrome extension was retired on 31 May 2024.

What to do

The best way to fix this issue permanently is to install the latest version of NHS Credential Management.

If you cannot install NHS Credential Management, talk to your IT team. If for any reason NHS Credential Management cannot be installed to fix this issue, your IT team will need to email [email protected] with:

  • the subject line 'Chrome extension dependency issue'
  • the specific circumstances that prevent NHS Credential Management installation

Temporary workaround

Enter this address into your Chrome browsers: chrome://extensions

You should see a panel stating 'This extension may soon no longer be supported'.

Chrome extension settings

Your system is using a version of Chrome that disables Manifest V2, the underlying technology that the NHS Chrome Extension is built upon, by default.

The 'NHS Smartcard Tools 0.7' extension (also known as the NHS Chrome extension) should be displayed on chrome://extensions with a disabled toggle (as shown above). For a short period of time you can temporarily enable unsupported extensions, meaning that the NHS Chrome extension can be quickly re-enabled by toggling the extension on.

This is a temporary workaround. It will only be available for a period of time dictated by Google, not the NHS. This should only be used as a short-term fix, and you should escalate to your IT team that you need to have NHS Credential Management installed as soon as possible.
