Digital wallets
A digital wallet is where a Digital Staff Passport user stores their credentials. The digital wallet used in the service can be found in the Microsoft Authenticator smartphone app and all users will need this app to use Digital Staff Passport.
What is a digital wallet?
A digital wallet is where Digital Staff Passport credentials are stored.
The digital wallet used in Digital Staff Passport can be found in the Microsoft Authenticator smartphone app. All users will need Microsoft Authenticator to use Digital Staff Passport.

Before you can use your digital wallet
Before you start using your Microsoft Authenticator digital wallet, you must have your identity verified.
The quick and easy way to do this is to use a verified digital identity app on your smartphone. You'll need to use a different app for this, not Microsoft Authenticator.

What are credentials?
Credentials are where a staff member's information is stored. Credentials move with a staff member when they move trusts.
Your credentials may include:
- personal details
- pre-employment checks
- core skills
- occupational health
Storing credentials in your digital wallet makes it safer and simpler to share information when you move between NHS trusts. Credentials are issued from and verified by the NHS trust you work for, with your approval.
How to use Microsoft Authenticator
While using Digital Staff Passport, you will sometimes see a QR code on your smartphone or in your browser when you:
- log in to the portal
- manage your credentials in the portal
An example of a QR code you might see is shown below.
When you see a QR code, scan it using the Microsoft Authenticator app on your smartphone. To get to the scan function, select 'Verified IDs' in the bottom-right of the screen, then the scan icon in the top-right of the screen.
Alternatively, if you are logging in to the employee portal using only your smartphone (rather than a browser on a computer), when you see the QR code you'll also see an orange button you can use to connect to the Microsoft Authenticator app.
What you see next in Microsoft Authenticator will depend on what you're trying to do. For step-by-step guidance on the different things you can do in Digital Staff Passport, see our user guides.
How secure is a digital passport?
Digital Staff Passport does not store its users’ information centrally.
Users control their data using their own mobile phone. They add their information to their digital wallet in the Microsoft Authenticator app, including a verified digital identity credential, plus other credentials such as their right to work, professional accreditations and training.
Employers can invite staff to share their credentials, or staff can offer to share with employers. Users are in control of their data at every stage.
When setting up your digital wallet we strongly recommend you protect your smartphone with a password or biometric scan to ensure the security of your information.
