Frontline capabilities - networks and connectivity

Ensuring NHS organisations have resilient and efficient networks and the required level of fixed and wireless connectivity across all sites and into the community, including a Centre of Excellence.

Background

The Networks and Connectivity Programme is part of Frontline Capabilities portfolio of work. It continues the work of the Future Connectivity programme (closed March 2025) in addition to supporting networks and connectivity transformation activity.

Networks and connectivity

Ensuring NHS organisations have resilient and efficient networks and the required level of fixed and wireless connectivity across all sites and into the community, including a Centre of Excellence.

This work will provide the critical underlying infrastructure to support and enable the digital transformation goals of the NHS 10-Year Plan.

The Network and Connectivity programme has 4 core delivery areas:

Connectivity Hub (Centre of Excellence) - works with NHS organisations to address connectivity challenges, share best practice and provide guidance and research on current and emerging connectivity technologies.

Resilience and Efficiency - will enable the NHS to assess network resilience and efficiency through self-assessment. It will provide focused intervention and investment to increase maturity.

Wireless on the Move - will provide a toolkit of connectivity solutions to improve the quality and coverage of connectivity in the community and neighbourhoods.

Wireless at NHS sites - will improve workforce wireless coverage and access across clinical settings including provision of a unified Wi-Fi solution.

These work areas are proposed under the Frontline Capabilities Programme business case and subject to approvals and associated budget setting for the financial year 2026/27 onwards.
