West Midlands Ambulance Service University NHS Foundation Trust

The Trust serves a population of 5.6 million people covering an area of more than 5,000 square miles made up of Shropshire, Herefordshire, Worcestershire, Staffordshire, Warwickshire, Coventry, Birmingham and Black Country conurbation.

Data centre circuit upgrades reduce saturation and potential bottlenecks alongside their Trust-funded remote site upgrade.

Challenge

Data centre interconnects experience regular saturation due to off-site backups.

The EPR system which runs on iPads is reliant on regular software updates. These are impacted by central circuit bandwidth saturation.

Remote site circuit upgrades also require data centre circuits to be upgraded to avoid potential bottlenecks.

Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) systems currently have sufficient bandwidth to operate, but future proofing is required.

Solution

Upgrade Point-of-Presence (PoP) circuits to 10Gbps in support of 15 ambulance hubs that are in the process of being upgraded to 10 Gbps.

Upgrade of existing data centre interconnects to 10Gbps to alleviate saturation and shorten backup durations.
