Integrate your system with the NHS England Terminology Server

Guidance for software developers interested in integrating their system with the NHS England Terminology Server.

The NHS England Terminology Server is arguably at its most powerful when integrated to automate some of the functions of other software, for example, in pre-populating coded options to verify the use of terminologies and classifications, or to support interrogation of data.

This integration is achieved through FHIR® ReSTful APIs. The NHS England Terminology Server may be used in this capacity as a real-time (runtime) resource to support other applications. The service is free of charge, but developers will need to:

  • describe to NHS England what they are planning to use the system for, to ensure this is appropriate
  • read the NHS England Terminology Server Agreement and apply for a system-to-system account via the request form

Additional training is also provided to guide developers in how to use the Terminology Server in this way, including through an exercise to practice the skills being taught (see bottom of page).

Depending on previous experience, some developers may firstly benefit from basic training in FHIR® or an overview of the Terminology Server.

The end point details that you will need when developing your systems can be found at https://ontology.nhs.uk/#api-endpoints
