Children and Young People with an Eating Disorder Referral to Treatment Times

Data Provision Notice to require the submission of data from acute and mental health trusts providing treatment services for children and young people with an eating disorder.

This collection was retired at the end of the 2022-23 reporting period. Information for activity for 2022-23 quarter 4 (January – March 2023) was the last to be collected.

The standards for Children and Young People Eating Disorders access and waiting times will in future be monitored through the Mental Health Services Data Set.

This Data Provision Notice is retained for historic information only and will be removed in due course.

Overview

NHS Digital has been directed by NHS England to establish a data collection to report on the number of children and young people who have accessed treatment services or who are still waiting for treatment, following a routine or urgent referral for a suspected eating disorder.

The Children and Young People with an Eating Disorder Referral to Treatment Times data collection measures the waiting time to start of treatment, and to count those still waiting for treatment.

The main purpose of the collection is to monitor compliance with the standards set introduced  in the Mental Health Services: Achieving Better Access by 2020 document published by the Department of Health and Social Care and  described in the Access and Waiting Time Standard for Children and Young People with an Eating Disorder Commissioning Guide.

In time the intention is that the Mental Health Services Data Set (MHSDS) should be used to report against these standards, but at present the use of MHSDS is being hampered by inconsistent application of SNOMED CT by providers.
