Cancer Registration Statistics, England, 2022

New data added:

  • Incidence counts and rates have been re-stated for cancers diagnosed between 2012 to 2022, reflecting the updated populations available using the 2021 census
  • Counts and rates have been provided for Persons in addition to Males and Females
  • We now use https://fingertips.phe.org.uk/documents/2021-lsoa-imd-lookup.xlsx to align deprivation scores with 2021 LSOAs
  • The data downloads for Cancer Registrations (Incidence)  now contain counts and age-standardised rates for England only. The interactive dashboard contains counts, age-specific, non-standardised and age-standardised rates for England and sub-national geographies

Coming Summer 2025:

  • Incidence counts and rates for small geographic areas including, Upper Tier Local Authority (UTLA) 2024 boundaries, Local authority district / unitary authority (LAUA) 2024 boundaries and Middle layer super output area (MSOA) using census 2021

Correction notice:

A coding error has resulted in incorrect populations being used as a denominator for age-specific rates for sub-national estimates. This has affected Tables 1 to 4.  The coding error has been fixed and the age-specific rates  for Government office regions, Cancer alliances,  and Integrated care boards have been updated to the correct values.

Summary

This publication reports on newly diagnosed cancers registered in England during 2022. It includes this summary report showing key findings, spreadsheet tables with more detailed estimates, and a methodology document.

Cancer registration estimates are provided for:

• Incidence of cancer using groupings that incorporate both the location and type of cancer by combinations of gender, age, deprivation, and stage at diagnosis (where appropriate) for England, former Government office regions, Cancer alliances and Integrated care boards

• Incidence and mortality (using ICD-10 3-digit codes) by gender and age group for England, former Government office regions, Cancer alliances and Integrated care boards

This publication will report on 2022 cancer registrations only, trends will not be reported as the required re-stated populations for 2012 to 2020 are not expected to be published by the Office of National Statistics (ONS) until Winter 2024.

Highlights

This publication uses the standard National Disease Registration Service (NDRS) cancer groupings. These groupings include a wide range of subtypes of cancer that may require different treatments and may have different outcomes. The different groupings have been consulted upon with patient representatives, charities and clinicians. The groups are defined using either ICD-O-2, ICD-O-3 or ICD-10 dependent on the cancer group. Please refer to 'Methodological change notice, 2021 registrations', Standard cancer group definitions - NDRS (digital.nhs.uk) and ‘Appendix A - Cancer group definitions' in the Resources below.

Key Facts

There were 346,217 new cancer diagnoses in 2022, on average 948 a day, which is 16,553 more than 2021.

Excluding basal cell carcinoma and cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma, half of all registered cancer diagnoses (51%) continue to be found in the 4 most common main cancer groups: prostate, breast, lung, or bowel.

Prostate cancer was the most commonly diagnosed cancer in 2022, with 54,732 new diagnoses, which is 11,354 more registrations than in 2021.
