Cancer Registration Statistics, England, 2022

National statistics, Accredited official statistics

Accredited official statistics logo.

New data added:

  • Incidence counts and rates have been re-stated for cancers diagnosed between 2012 to 2022, reflecting the updated populations available using the 2021 census
  • Counts and rates have been provided for Persons in addition to Males and Females
  • We now use https://fingertips.phe.org.uk/documents/2021-lsoa-imd-lookup.xlsx to align deprivation scores with 2021 LSOAs
  • The data downloads for Cancer Registrations (Incidence)  now contain counts and age-standardised rates for England only. The interactive dashboard contains counts, age-specific, non-standardised and age-standardised rates for England and sub-national geographies

Coming Summer 2025:

  • Incidence counts and rates for small geographic areas including, Upper Tier Local Authority (UTLA) 2024 boundaries, Local authority district / unitary authority (LAUA) 2024 boundaries and Middle layer super output area (MSOA) using census 2021

Correction notice:

A coding error has resulted in incorrect populations being used as a denominator for age-specific rates for sub-national estimates. This has affected Tables 1 to 4.  The coding error has been fixed and the age-specific rates  for Government office regions, Cancer alliances,  and Integrated care boards have been updated to the correct values.

Report bulletin

Presents a detailed summary of the 2022 cancer registrations and cancer death registrations. Information on methodology and quality of data is also provided.

Data tables

New tables updated on 5 June 2025:

Estimates of cancer incidence between 2013 and 2022 are published using the NDRS cancer groups and are aggregated by deprivation and stage at diagnosis for England (Table 1).

Estimates of cancer incidence between 2001 and 2022 are published using ICD-10 codes for England (Table 2).

Estimates of cancer mortality are unchanged and can still be found in Table 4 of the previously published files.

Previously published files:

Estimates of cancer incidence are published using the NDRS cancer groups and are aggregated by deprivation (Table 1) and stage at diagnosis (Table 2). Tables 1 and 2 are split into 4 separate spreadsheets based on geography – England, former Government office regions, Cancer alliances and Integrated care boards.

The NDRS main groups ‘other malignant’, ‘ungrouped in situ tumours’ and ‘ungrouped uncertain/unknown tumours’ are all non-homogenous groups, and as such are not presented in Tables 1 or 2 of the accompanying data releases.  These diagnoses are presented using ICD-10 codes in Table 3 of the accompanying data releases.

For comparison to previous years and to align the way mortality is recorded in ICD-10, a table of estimates of cancer incidence in groups defined purely by their location in the body using ICD-10 is provided in Table 3 of the accompanying data releases.

Estimates of cancer mortality are provided in Table 4 and grouped in the same way as the incidence estimates in Table 3 (i.e. using ICD-10 coding) of the accompanying data releases.

Interactive dashboard

The main report is accompanied by an interactive data dashboard. This will allow readers to download or view data that is contained within the published data tables, with the added functionality of combining age groups.

Updated on 5 June 2025 to include cancer incidence for small geographic areas.

Appendices

Appendix A provides a detailed breakdown of the definitions used to define the NDRS cancer groups used in this report.

Quality and methodology

The Cancer Registrations: Quality and Methodology Information report provides detailed information on how cancer registrations are defined, their quality and the methods used in this report.
