Summary
This publication shows a count of written complaints made by (or on behalf of) patients, received between 1 April 2022 and 31 March 2023 in England. The two data collections are:
i) KO41a – NHS Hospital and Community Health Services (HCHS)
ii) KO41b – Primary Care (GP and Dental)
Key Facts
All NHS Written Complaints: (Hospital and Community Health Services and Primary Care)
- The total number of all reported written complaints in the NHS in 2022-23 was 229,458, an increase of 3,888 (1.7%) from 2021-22 (225,570).
Hospital and Community Health Services (HCHS)
- Within HCHS there were 103,874 complaints in 2022-23, a decrease of 1,632 (1.5%) from 2021-22 (105,506).
- The proportion of complaints being fully upheld was 27.6%.
- The largest proportion of new complaints received by individual subject area was Communications with 16.6%.
Primary Care (GP and Dental)
- Within primary care there were 125,584 complaints in 2022-23, an increase of 5,520 (4.6%) from 2021-22 (120,064).
- The proportion of complaints being fully upheld was 32.0%.
- The largest proportion of new complaints received by individual subject area in General and Dental Practices was Clinical Treatment with 13.8% (GP) and 24.8% (Dental).
