Estates Returns Information Collection, Summary page and dataset for ERIC 2022/23


Summary

These are the results from the 2022/23 Estates Return Information Collection (ERIC), a mandatory collection for all NHS trusts including Ambulance trusts. It comprises information relating to the costs of providing and maintaining the NHS Estate including buildings, maintaining and equipping hospitals, the provision of services e.g. laundry and food, and the costs and consumption of utilities.

Since the 2018/19 collection NHS England's Workforce and Estates Team and Estates Division have jointly undertaken additional measures to improve data quality. These include extra validations on point of entry and alignment of communications and clarifications to data providers, and an enhanced assurance process once the initial collection phase had been completed. Chief Executive signoff of returns is also required a part of the "commit data" process. NHS England engages closely with trusts to clarify requirements and support accurate reporting via webinars and our timely user support service.

Data users should note that several data fields are currently labelled as unreliable due to having changed definition since the previous reporting period, or due to being introduced relatively recently. Please see the introduction and data quality worksheets for more information.


Highlights

NHS England has continued to work alongside stakeholders and data providers to improve data quality for the 2022/23 collection. This includes an extensive annual data assurance exercise, and further data definition refinement. At national level, information is considered to be broadly comparable across the same type of data providers although statistics should still be treated with caution, especially where labelled as experimental. 

Please ensure you use these statistics with reference to the Data Quality Statement. This will be updated should any errors be reported after publication.  The current version is number 1, published on the 14th December 2023.

On 19th December 2023 it was identified that columns EJ-EL in the 'Site Level Data' tab in the Excel report were incorrectly labelled and should have been labelled as Domestic waste (recycling) volume, Domestic waste (incineration) cost, and Domestic waste (incineration) volume. These were amended in version 2 of the report. 

On 7th October 2024 it was identified that the headings for the data years in Tables 13 and 14 of the report were incorrectly labelled as the previous years - these have now been corrected to read 2021/22 and 2022/23.  No other fields or data products were affected. We apologise for any inconvenience caused, and urge users to download the latest copy of the report tables (version 3).

IMPORTANT: Please note that, following an extensive review of ERIC data in 2024, many trusts reported errors for various data fields in past publications. We are in the process of publishing details and considering whether the dataset should be revised. For the 2022/23 results, the most significant differences were reported for the Investment to reduce Backlog Maintenance - Critical Infrastructure Risk and Investment to reduce Backlog Maintenance - non-Critical Infrastructure Risk fields. Please see the "Other Information and Issues" section of this page for more details, and use the Amendments file below if you are using data for these fields. 

 

For the period 1st April 2022 to 31st March 2023, NHS organisations reported:

Key Facts

The total costs of running the NHS estate were £12.4 billion

This is an increase of 12.0 per cent since 2021/22.

The total energy usage from all energy sources across the NHS estate was 11.2 billion kWh

This is a decrease of 1.65% per cent since 2021/22.

The total cost to eradicate backlog was £11.6 billion

This is an increase of 13.6 per cent since 2021/22

This is also known as 'backlog maintenance' and is measure of how much would need to  be invested to restore a building to a certain state based on a state of assessed risk criteria. It does not include planned maintenance work (rather, it is work that should already have taken place).

The total cost for cleaning services was £1.3 billion.

 This is an increase of 10.3 per cent since 2021/22.

The total cost of providing inpatient food was £0.8 billion

This is an increase of 13.7 per cent since 2021/22.

Please note that any costs, capital and/or revenue related to Covid-19 incurred during the reporting year are not included in ERIC figures where they were allocated to a specific trust-wide Covid-19 budget. However, any additional costs allocated to pay and non-pay budgets in specific areas such as cleaning, waste and energy relating to Covid-19 were included where they could not be identified and removed.
