Publication, Part of

General Practice Workforce 31 March 2021

Publication archived

As part of the 31 December 2021 publication, released on 10 February 2022, we introduced a significant methodological change and recalculated and re-published all historical figures back to September 2015, which means that figures in that release differ from and supersede those previously published, including those in this publication.

These pages have been retained in the publication archive for your reference, but the figures presented should no longer be used.

See the Methodological Review and Changes page of the December 2021 publication for an explanation of the changes.

Notice of Changes

Annex B - 'ad-hoc' locums

The Data Quality - March 2021 page describes the difference in how we collect information about 'ad-hoc' locums  compared to all other staff roles, including 'regular' locums.

Because 'ad-hoc' locum headcounts and FTE figures are collected and calculated differently to the rest of the General Practice workforce, we have introduced Annex B to the bulletin, which presents an 'ad-hoc' locum FTE and headcount time series from March 2019 onwards, along with - for additional context - the numbers of these GPs (by headcount) who also held another role in the General Practice during the applicable period.

We previously published these regular and 'ad-hoc' locum counts together in a single GP Locum category in our bulletin, but we are now reporting them as 'regular' locums and 'ad-hoc' locums.

NHS England and NHS Improvement regional restructure

A restructure of Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) came into effect from 1 April 2021 and is reflected in the breakdowns within this release. Historical Practice and Individual-level CSVs will be re-mapped to the new structure and republished in due course.

Forthcoming changes

Trainee nurses

Further clarity is planned to the bulletin tables to highlight which sub-group of nurses include trainee nurses.
