Establishment of Integrated Care Boards (ICBs) / Integrated Care Partnerships (ICPs), and abolition of CCGs and STPs, as of July 2022

Integrated Care Systems (ICSs) were formally established across the NHS in England on 1 July 2022, with the introduction of Integrated Care Boards (ICBs) and Integrated Care Partnerships (ICPs), and abolition of CCGs.

Further information around the introduction of ICBs and ICPs is available via the relevant Organisation Data Service (ODS) page here.

The derivations necessary to support reporting under the new commissioning structures have been completed and this publication has now been updated to include ICB (LMNS) and sub-ICB breakdowns in the CSV Data and Measures files.

Data quality note - BMI recording

Following the identification of a data quality issue in the BMI_14+1Wks measure in this publication which was leading to some women being incorrectly assigned to higher BMI categories than they should have been, we have updated the construction of this measure to correct for this. More information about this updated logic can be found in the accompanying Metadata file.

This data quality issue led to some incorrect BMI_14+1Wks figure originally being reported in this July data. This has now been corrected and this publication has been updated to include revised BMI figures in the Measures file.

Antenatal booking appointments

Gestational age at booking appointment

At the booking appointment, the woman will be given information relating to the baby's development stages, nutrition and screening tests available.
NICE recommends that this appointment should ideally take place before 10 weeks' gestation.

58% of booking appointments were at or before 10 weeks' gestation.

Booking after more than 20 weeks of pregnancy accounted for 8% per cent of booking appointments.

Smoking Status of Women at booking appointment

Smoking during pregnancy, or living with someone who smokes, can affect the baby both before and after birth.

At the time of their booking appointment, 11% of women with a recorded smoking status were smokers, and 89% were non-smokers.

Of all women 92% had a recorded smoking status.

Complex social factors

14% of women attending a booking appointment had complex social factors recorded

Women with complex social factors may need additional support to use antenatal care services. 7,385 women attending a booking appointment had complex social factors recorded and 46,160 had a recording of no complex social factors. The remaining women did not have a complex social factor recorded.

Personalised care

The NHS Long Term Plan and the accompanying guidance, Universal Personalised Care, made commitments to delivering choice and personalisation in maternity services, complimenting the recommendations in the national maternity review, Better Births

When a Personalised Care and Support Plan (PCSP) has been agreed, this should be recorded and submitted.

116 trusts have reported that PCSPs are in place for a total of 108,260 women. This is 2 more trusts than in the previous month.

Administrative Sources

Maternity Services Data Set (MSDS): this is a patient-level data set that captures information about activity carried out by Maternity Services relating to a mother and baby(s), from the point of the first booking appointment until mother and baby(s) are discharged from maternity services. This is a secondary uses data set, which re-uses clinical and operational data for purposes other than direct patient care.
