About this publication

Local Authorities in England measure children in mainstream state-maintained schools during the school (academic) year which starts in September and finishes in July. The statistical reports  contain analyses of Body Mass Index (BMI) classification rates by age, sex and ethnicity as well as geographic analyses. Note that data for the 2020/21 school year was reported at national and regional level only due to COVID-19 disruptions to data collection.

Annual reports up to the 2023/24 School Year were published by NHS England.

In November 2025 the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) will take responsibility for the publication of the annual accredited official statistics report alongside updating the NCMP indicators on Fingertips.

The DHSC report will be similar to the previous reports, however:

  • BMI category prevalence data by ONS area classification and rural/urban classification will not be included for postcode of school or postcode of child
  • BMI category prevalence data by Index of Multiple Deprivation decile split by sex will not be included
  • BMI category prevalence data by region and local authority, and by Index of Multiple Deprivation decile will be shown only by postcode of child.
