Summary
This report presents findings from the Government's National Child Measurement Programme (NCMP) for England, 2018-19 school year.
It covers children in Reception (aged 4-5 years) and Year 6 (aged 10-11 years) in mainstream state-maintained schools in England.
The report contains analyses of Body Mass Index (BMI) classification rates by age, sex and ethnicity as well as geographic analyses.
A record-level anonymised file has been made available in January 2020 to accompany this publication
Highlights
In Reception obesity prevalence increased
to 9.7% in 2018/19 from 9.5% in 2017/18
In Year 6 obesity prevalence remained similar
at 20.2% in 2018/19
Obesity prevalence was higher for boys than girls in both age groups
10.0% of boys in reception were obese compared to 9.4% of girls 22.5% of boys in year 6 were obese compared to 17.8% of girls
Obesity prevalence increases with deprivation
Obesity prevalence for children living in the most deprived areas was more than double that of those living in the least deprived areas for both reception and year 6
