What are the characteristics of adults diagnosed with type 1 diabetes?
Age
* ONS 2020 mid-year population estimates for England and Wales.
Ethnicity
** Data from 2011 Census (England and Wales).
*** People whose ethnicity is ‘Unknown / Not stated’ excluded from calculation.
Deprivation
- The distribution of adults with type 1 diabetes across age bands, ethnicity groups and social deprivation quintiles is similar to the distribution shown in the 2019-20 type 1 report.
- No quintile of deprivation is associated with a higher or lower likelihood of having type 1 diabetes.
Smoking status

**Health Survey for England groups do not include the generic “non-smoker (history unknown)” category
- The distribution of adults with type 1 diabetes across smoking status groups is similar to the pattern seen in the Health Survey for England in 2019
Diabetes duration
- It is usually more difficult to achieve glucose control targets after 5 to 10 years of type 1 diabetes. Three-quarters of adults with type 1 diabetes have a diabetes duration of 10 or more years.
