Change to mapping used for integrated care board (ICB) analysis
An issue was found with the mapping used to define integrated card boards (ICB) in this report resulting in larger than expected cohorts for each ICB. This has been corrected in this report and has resulted in slight changes to the results of analyses broken down by ICB.

Incidence and prevalence of diabetes, 2017-18 to 2021-22
Incidence
Incidence
- Incidence is reported for financial years. Incidence in 2017-18 includes the newly diagnosed cases between 1 April 2017 to 31 March 2018.
- Prevalence is reported for audit years. Prevalence in 2017-18 includes the number of cases between 1 January 2017 to 31 March 2018.
Incidence of type 1 diabetes in England, 2017-18 to 2021-22 - All ages
Incidence of type 1 diabetes in Wales, 2017-18 to 2021-22 - All ages
Incidence of type 2 and other diabetes in England, 2017-18 to 2021-22 - All ages
Incidence of type 2 and other diabetes in Wales, 2017-18 to 2021-22 - All ages
Notes:
1. See Definitions in Additional information for definition of type 2 and other diabetes.
- The incidence of type 1 diabetes in England remained stable during the beginning of the pandemic period, followed by a slight decrease in 2021-22 (9,500 in 2019-20, 9,590 in 2020-21 and 9,275 in 2021-22).
- The incidence of type 1 diabetes in Wales decreased slightly during the beginning of the pandemic period but then increased in 2021-22 (465 in 2019-20, 445 in 2020-21 and 485 in 2021-22).
- For type 2 and other diabetes, incidence dropped between 2019-20 and 2020-21 (from 229,355 in 2019-20 to 183,510 in 2020-21 for England; from 13,605 in 2019-20 to 9,880 in 2020-21 for Wales). In 2021-22 incidence nearly recovered back to the upward trend seen before the pandemic (reaching 243,160 in England and 12,315 in Wales in 2021-22) (1). However, the incidence in 2021-22 is only slightly greater in England and lower in Wales than incidence in 2019-20. This suggests there is a still a shortfall in number of those diagnosed during the first year of the pandemic.
Notes:
1. See figures 3 and 4 for evidence of upward trend before pandemic.
Incidence of type 1 diabetes in England, 2017-18 to 2021-22 - Under 19 years old
Incidence of type 1 diabetes in Wales, 2017-18 to 2021-22 - Under 19 years old
Incidence of type 2 and other diabetes in England, 2017-18 to 2021-22 - Under 19 years old
Incidence of type 2 and other diabetes in Wales, 2017-18 to 2021-22 - Under 19 years old
- In the last 4 years the incidence of type 1 diabetes in under 19 year olds in England has increased year-on-year, from 3,250 people in 2018-19 to 4,145 in 2021-22.
- A similar pattern can be seen in under 19 year olds in Wales with the incidence of type 1 diabetes rising year-on-year from 170 in 2018-19 to 245 in 2021-22.
- The incidence of type 2 diabetes and other in under 19 year olds in England decreased from 775 in 2019-20 to 695 in 2020-21. However, incidence then increased to 890 in 2021-22.
- The incidence of type 2 and other diabetes in under 19 year olds in Wales decreased from 45 in 2019-20 to 40 in 2020-21 and 2021-22. However, given the small numbers any interpretation from these figures should be treated with caution.
