Summary

Patients undergoing elective inpatient surgery for hip and knee replacement, funded by the English NHS are asked to complete questionnaires before and after their operations to assess improvement in health as perceived by the patients themselves. This publication is for Finalised Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) in England - April 2021 to March 2022.

Please note that this publication covers a period where health services were affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. The completion, return and processing of questionnaire data analysed in this publication will have occurred during a period where restrictions on movement and changes to behaviours may have affected response levels.


Key Facts

97% of respondents reported an improvement for hip replacements

These patients reported an improvement for the Oxford Hip Score

The average health gain on the Oxford Hip Score was 22.5

95% of respondents reported an improvement for knee replacements

These patients reported an improvement for the Oxford Knee Score.

The average health gain on the Oxford Knee Score was 17.3

At least 90% of respondents felt better after their operation

95% of hip replacement patients and 90% of knee replacement patients felt better after the operation.

The majority of patients thought the results of their operation were excellent, very good or good.

This occurred for 93% of hip replacement patients and 87% of knee replacement patients.
