Part 1 - Quit attempts and self-reported quit rates by demographic variables


Addition of data quality note

We have been made aware of a data quality issue affecting the breakdown of pharmacotherapy data for Kirklees LA.  Whilst the overall number of people setting a quit date and the number of successful quitters is correct, the breakdown is incorrect.  This will also affect the England and Yorkshire and the Humber region data as well for these breakdowns (included in Part 3 and tables 4.4 & 4.5 within the supporting data tables).

Part 1 - Quit attempts and self-reported quit rates by demographic variables

This section of the report presents information on the number of quit attempts and self-reported quit rates by a range of demographic variables.


Gender

Number of quit attempts

A higher number of females attempted to quit in 2021/22 (100,982) than males (77,216).

Self-reported quit rate

Males had a higher self-reported quit rate than females (57% and 53% respectively) but similar CO validated quit rates (3% and 4% respectively).


Age

Number of quit attempts

There was no clear pattern by age.  The largest number of quit attempts came from the 45-59 year old age group (32% of all attempts).

Self-reported quit rate

The self-reported quit rate increased with age, reaching 58% for those aged 60 and over.


Ethnicity

Number of quit attempts

Of those setting a quit date in 2021/22, 152,524 (86%) were of a White ethnicity.

The next most represented ethnicity was Asian or Asian British, with 6,983 (4%) of those setting a quit date.

Self-reported quit rate

The self-reported quit rate by ethnic category ranged from 52% for 'Mixed' to 55% for 'White' and 'Asian or Asian British'.

Male/female split by ethnicity

The proportion of those setting a quit date by gender varies across ethnic groups. For 'Asian or Asian British', 75% of those attempting to set a quit date were males. For 'White' and 'Mixed', males made up just 42% of those setting a quit date.


Socio-economic classification

Number of quit attempts

Socio-economic classification has been determined by smoking cessation advisors using a methodology adapted for use in NHS Smoking Cessation Services. For more details about socio-economic classification, please consult the Notes & Definitions section of Stop Smoking Services Q4 2021/22 data tables.

The largest number of quit attempts came from 'Routine and manual occupations' (45,830). The next most represented group, with 29,562 quit attempts, was 'Never worked or unemployed for over 1 year'.

Self-reported quit rate

The self-reported quit rates varies across socio-economic groups, ranging from 84% for 'Prisoner' to 50% for ‘Full time students’.


Region

Number of quit attempts

The South East had the highest number of quit attempts (29,805) and West Midlands had the lowest (11,033).

Self-reported quit rate

The self-reported quit rate was highest in Yorkshire and Humber (63%) and lowest in South West (48%).


Pregnant women

Number of quit attempts

15,993 pregnant women set a quit date in 2021/22. This is a 12% decrease on 2020/21 (18,087) and is the highest number since 2015/16 (17,443).

Self-reported quit rate

The self-reported quit rate was 46% in 2021/22. However, the CO validated quit rate was 8.2% in 2021/22, rising from 2.1% in 2020/21, but falling from 24% to 28% in previous years.
