Data Quality

This section presents information for a variety of data quality measures for 2024/25 and across the previous 11 years.  For further information about data quality measures, please consult the Data Quality Statement, which accompanies this publication.

Proportion of unknown data items

The proportion of quit attempts where the outcome is unknown/lost to follow up is 20.5% in 2024/25. This has increased for the fourth year in a row from 15.8% in 2020/21, and is higher than the last financial year before the COVID-19 pandemic, 2019/20 (19.3%). Before 2020/21, the proportion of quit attempts where the outcome is unknown had decreased annually from 23% in 2014/15.

The proportion of records with a missing socio-economic code is 13.5% in 2024/25. This figure had increased gradually since 2019/20 (8.4%) until it dropped to 10.7% in 2023/24 from 12.4% in 2022/23, it has increased again for 2024/25. Prior to this the proportion of records with a missing socio-economic code remained consistently between 8.7% and 9.0% from 2015/16 to 2018/19.

There was a sharp increase in the proportion of records with an intervention setting categorised as 'Other' from 2019/20 to 2021/22, from 3.2% to 11.6%. This coincided with the COVID-19 pandemic. While there was a decrease in 2022/23 (8.7%), the proportion of records with an intervention setting categorised as 'Other' has increased for the second year in a row to 11.7% in 2024/25.

The proportion of records where ethnic group was not stated increased gradually from 2019/20 (4.3%) until it dropped to 6.3% in 2023/24 from 6.6% in 2022/23. However, has increased to 6.9% in 2024/25 and remains above 6.0% for the third time since before 2013/14.

Non-submitting local authorities

4 LAs did not submit data for one or more quarters in 2024/25. Some non-submitting LAs will still be running Stop Smoking Services but not submitting data. Some LAs will no longer be running Stop Smoking Services. For other non-submitting LAs it is not possible to ascertain which category the LA falls into. The non-submitting LAs in 2024/25 are:

  • Birmingham,
  • Isles of Scilly
  • Westmorland and Furness
  • Enfield

The stop smoking services for the Isles of Scilly residents are provided by Cornwall council therefore they have submitted a nil return.

See table 4.3 for further information.

No estimates have been made for the LAs not submitting data.
