Percentage known to be smokers by year

9.6% of pregnant women were known to be smokers at the time of delivery during quarter 3 of 2020-21.

This is a slight decrease from 9.9% in the previous quarter (quarter 2, 2020-21). 

The current national ambition is to achieve a level of 6% or less by 2022.


Percentage known to be smokers by Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG)

In quarter 3 of 2020-21, the lowest proportions of women known to be smokers at time of delivery were NHS Central London (1.3%), NHS West London (1.8%) and NHS Hammersmith and Fulham (2.2%).

Three CCGs had proportions above 20%. Those with the highest were NHS Blackpool (23.7%), NHS North East Lincolnshire (22.8%) and NHS Hull (20.5%).

No data was received for NHS Leeds CCG for quarter 3.

Percentage known to be smokers by Clinical Commissioning Group, compared with the national ambition

In quarter 3 of 2020-21, 24 out of 135 CCGs met the national ambition of 6% or less.

In the London NHS England region, it was achieved by 15 out of 18 CCGs, but only by 9 CCGs outside of London.

No data was received for NHS Leeds CCG for quarter 3.
