Proposals to change this publication
The proposal is for the data source for this publication will be changed to the Maternity Services Data Set (MSDS).
This proposal has been driven by the need to reduce burden on data collection. The proposal is to decommission the original data collection and merge the publication into the Maternity services monthly statistics publication. This will increase the potential for additional breakdowns to be included.
The consultation can be found here: Health and social care statistical outputs published by DHSC (including OHID), NHSBSA, UKHSA, ONS and NHS England - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)

8.0% of pregnant women were known to be smokers at the time of delivery during quarter 1 of 2023-2024.
This is a decrease from 8.7% in the previous quarter (Q4 of 2022-2023).
The current national ambition is to achieve a level of 6% or less by 2022.
Percentage known to be smokers by Sub Integrated Care Board (Sub-ICB)
In quarter 1 of 2023-2024, the lowest proportions of women known to be smokers at time of delivery were in NHS North West London ICB - W2U3Z (3.1%), NHS Suffolk and North East Essex ICB - 06L (4.0%) and NHS North East London ICB - A3A8R (4.1%) and NHS South East London ICB - 72Q (4.1%).

Data was received from all Sub-ICBs for quarter 1.
Due to a technical issue we are unable to include the map showing the percentage of women smoking at time of delivery in Q1 2023-24 by Sub-ICB and are working with ONS to resolve the issue. We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.

Percentage known to be smokers by Sub Integrated Care Board, compared with the national ambition
In quarter 1 of 2023-2024, 18 out of 106 submitting Sub-ICBs met the national ambition of 6% or less.
All five Sub-ICBs in the London NHS England region met the target and over one third of Sub-ICBs in the East of England and South East regions. The remaining regions met the target for fewer than 10% of their Sub-ICBs.
Due to a technical issue we are unable to include the map showing whether Sub-ICBs have met the national ambition of 6% in quarter 1 2023-24 and are working with ONS to resolve the issue. We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.
