Women known to be smokers at time of delivery

Percentage known to be smokers by year

8.8% of pregnant women were known to be smokers at the time of delivery during quarter 3 of 2021-2022.

A 0.2 percentage point decrease from quarter 2 of 2021-2022 (9.0%), but above the national ambition of 6% or less.

The current national ambition is to achieve a level of 6% or less by 2022.


Percentage known to be smokers by Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG)

In quarter 3 of 2021-2022, the lowest proportions of women known to be smokers at time of delivery were in NHS North West London CCG (2.7%), NHS South East London CCG (4.0%) and NHS Brighton and Hove CCG (4.4%).

7 CCGs had proportions above 15%. Those with the highest were NHS Blackpool CCG (19.1%), NHS North East Lincolnshire CCG (18.7%) and NHS North Lincolnshire CCG (18.1%).

Data was received from all CCGs for quarter 3.

Percentage known to be smokers by Clinical Commissioning Group, compared with the national ambition

In quarter 3 of 2021-2022, 14 out of 106 submitting CCGs met the national ambition of 6% or less.

In the London NHS England region, it was achieved by 5 out of 5 CCGs, but only by 9 CCGs outside of London.
