Statistics on Women's Smoking Status at Time of Delivery: England, Quarter 4, 2023/24

Women known to be smokers at time of delivery

7.4% of pregnant women were known to be smokers at the time of delivery in 2023-2024
This is a decrease from 8.8% in 2022-23 and from 12.2% in 2013-14.
The current national ambition is to achieve a level of 6% or less by 2022.
Percentage known to be smokers by Sub Integrated Care Board (Sub-ICB)
In quarter 4 of 2023-2024, the lowest proportions of women known to be smokers at time of delivery were in NHS North West London ICB - W2U3Z (2.5%), NHS Bedfordshire, Luton and Milton Keynes ICB - M1J4Y (2.5%), NHS North East London ICB - A3A8R (3.3%) and NHS Greater Manchester ICB - 02A (3.4%).
Two Sub-ICBs had proportions above 15%. Those with the highest were NHS Humber and North Yorkshire ICB - 03F (15.9%) and NHS Lancashire and South Cumbria ICB - 00R (15.7%).
Data was received from all Sub-ICBs for quarter 4.

Percentage known to be smokers by Sub Integrated Care Board, compared with the national ambition
In quarter 4 of 2023-2024, 28 out of 106 submitting Sub-ICBs met the national ambition of 6% or less.
In the North West NHS England region, it was achieved by 8 out of 27 Sub-ICBs, but only by 20 Sub-ICBs outside of North West.
