Introduction
The Endometrial Cancer Audit Pilot (ECAP) has been established with the aim of exploring the feasibility of a national clinical audit in endometrial cancer of information that is routinely submitted by gynae-oncology teams across England and which form the monthly flow of data into the Cancer Outcomes and Services Dataset (COSD), as well as other linked data that is already collected including SACT, RTDS and HES.
Whilst the pilot only includes English data, the partner organisations are working towards facilitation of similar data analyses by the cancer registration services in the devolved UK nations.
The pilot is a joint project funded by the following partner organisations, with analytical support from NHS England’s National Disease Registration Service and Health Data Insight CIC:
- The British Gynaecological Cancer Society (BCGS): a society of professionals dedicated to improving the care provided to patients with gynaecological cancers. The BGCS formulates and delivers policy on gynaecological cancer research, prevention, diagnosis and treatment in the United Kingdom. Members include medical practitioners clinical nurse specialists and other allied professionals including scientists who have an interest in gynaecological cancers.
- The Eve Appeal: The Eve Appeal is the leading gynaecological cancer charity. To help save lives, we focus on preventing and improving the early diagnosis of womb, ovarian, cervical, vulval and vaginal cancer.
- Peaches Womb Cancer Trust: Peaches Womb Cancer Trust, the UK's foremost womb cancer charity, actively works to improve the lives of everyone affected by womb cancer. We achieve this through raising awareness, supporting and advocating for patients, funding and promoting crucial research.
The work done as part of the ECAP is in partnership with the following organisations:
Acknowledgement
This work uses data that has been provided by patients and collected by the NHS as part of their care and support. The data are collated, maintained and quality assured by the National Disease Registration Service, which is part of NHS England.
Methodology
The ECAP will follow a similar approach to that used previously within the Ovarian Cancer Audit Feasibility Pilot.
The pilot will run for two years and will perform meaningful analysis of routinely collected data to publish a range of data outputs on endometrial cancer throughout that time for the purposes of improving treatment and outcomes for women diagnosed with endometrial cancer in England.
Rather than collect fresh information the analyses will be achieved by linking databases which capture clinical data on cancer and its treatment in routine day-to-day practice in NHS hospitals in England. The Cancer Outcomes and Services Dataset (COSD) captures details of every cancer diagnosed in NHS organisations, including pathology details and a set of important clinical parameters such as disease stage.
The quality and subsequent success of the project is therefore dependent on the level of completeness and accuracy of the data captured in these data sets. Information on the completeness of information is available to providers via the CancerStats2 portal*. (This opens in a new window). Additionally, trust-level findings on endometrial cancer incidence, mortality and survival are available via this portal.
*Please note that this platform requires an N3/HSCN secure network connection and password access which can be authorised for relevant NHS staff by provider trust cancer management teams
